Your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class should feel structured and welcoming, not like being thrown into a fight. You will learn a small number of movements, practise them with a partner and receive guidance from an instructor. You do not need previous martial arts experience, exceptional fitness or your own uniform to try a beginner class at GJJ Singapore.

What to Wear to Your First BJJ Class

Standard sports clothing is suitable for a trial class. Choose a fitted T-shirt or rashguard and shorts or athletic trousers without zips, buckles or hard pockets. Loose clothing can catch on hands and feet, while metal parts can scratch a training partner. Remove watches, jewellery and piercings that could snag before stepping onto the mat.

Bring a few simple essentials:

  • A bottle of water
  • A towel if you plan to shower afterwards
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn slowly

What Happens When You Arrive

Arrive around 10 to 15 minutes early. This gives you time to introduce yourself, complete any registration steps, change and tell the instructor about injuries or physical limitations. Mentioning a sensitive knee, shoulder or back is useful information; it allows the coach to modify movements and choose an appropriate partner.

You will usually be shown where to leave your belongings, how to enter the mat area and the basic etiquette of the academy. Jiu-Jitsu has traditions, but beginners are not expected to know them in advance. Watch the class, listen to the coach and ask whenever something is unclear.

The Structure of a Beginner Class

Movement and Preparation

Class may begin with mobility exercises and movements that prepare the body for the technique being taught. The purpose is not to exhaust you. It is to help you move safely and become familiar with actions such as maintaining posture, creating distance or moving your hips.

Technique Demonstration

The instructor demonstrates a technique in clear stages and explains why each detail matters. Beginner training focuses on reliable fundamentals: posture, balance, leverage, distance management and safe escapes. You are not expected to remember every detail after seeing it once. Learning happens through explanation, repetition and correction.

Partner Practice

You then practise with a partner at a controlled pace. A good partner provides enough cooperation for you to understand the movement without making it unrealistic. At GJJ Singapore, training is progressive and partners are chosen with safety, size and experience in mind. If you feel uncomfortable or confused, pause and ask the instructor for help.

Will You Have to Spar on Your First Day?

Live sparring is encouraged but not compulsory. The priority is to build correct reactions and a technical foundation in a controlled environment. More advanced students use controlled sparring to develop timing and decision-making, but a new student should first understand positions, personal safety and how to stop an exchange.

Do You Need to Be Fit Before Starting?

No. Waiting until you are fit enough often means never beginning. Jiu-Jitsu fitness develops gradually because the activity combines movement, coordination, problem-solving and resistance. Work at a pace that lets you learn. Rest when necessary and focus on efficient movement instead of trying to match experienced students physically.

Basic Hygiene and Mat Etiquette

Good hygiene protects everyone who trains:

  • Wear clean training clothes for every class
  • Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed
  • Cover small cuts securely before training
  • Do not train with a contagious skin condition, fever or significant illness
  • Tell your partner immediately if you need to stop

What to Expect After Class

It is normal to feel mentally full after your first lesson. You may remember only one position or one detail, and that is enough. Mild muscular soreness can occur when your body performs unfamiliar movements, but sharp pain should not be ignored. Hydrate, rest and make a note of any questions you want to ask next time.

The free 2-day trial at GJJ Singapore gives you more than one opportunity to experience the teaching style, meet training partners and decide whether the environment suits you. Classes are available at Lavender and SAFRA Choa Chu Kang.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I try BJJ without owning a Gi?

Yes. Standard sports clothing is suitable for a trial. A Gi can be rented for Gi sessions, but wearing one is not mandatory for a trial class.

Will I be forced to spar during my first class?

No, not at all. The Street Safe beginner programme prioritises structured technical learning rather than placing new students directly into live sparring.

What if I have an old injury?

Tell the instructor before class and describe any movements your healthcare professional has advised you to avoid. The coach can then explain whether and how the lesson can be modified.

How early should I arrive for a BJJ trial class?

Arriving 10 to 15 minutes early gives you enough time to register if needed, change, meet the instructor and discuss any questions or physical limitations.
