Our Academy fosters a strong culture of learning, co-operation and community, making it a safe and enjoyable way for everyone to practice and advance their understanding of self-defence through Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Our mission is to bring the amazing lifelong benefits of practising this wonderful art to people of every age, size and walk of life!
About Gracie Jiu-Jitsu
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was born out of a combative form of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu which was preserved and developed by the Gracie Family as a highly practical self-defence system that is designed to help smaller and weaker people survive in hostile situations. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu teaches students to utilise their understanding of distance management, leverage, body mechanics, movement and strategy to survive much larger opponents.
Helio Gracie (Opposite), one of the Art’s founders, had to find a way to make the jiu-jitsu of the past work for his weaker and limited athletic ability, the result is the system of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu we see and practice today.
Because of its widespread applicability, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu has been taught to law enforcement agencies, military personnel, at risk groups, corporates and members of the public all around the world. And has started to emerge as a core component in the training of major police players and security personnel in the U.S. and most recently, in the United Nations.
Today it continues to provide people of all shapes sizes and ages with an effective, controlled and proportional method of self-protection.
A Glance into History:
From the Japanese to the Gracies
The Gracie family was taught a form of Jiu-Jitsu by a Japanese emigrant to Brazil, a man named Mitsuyo Maeda. Maeda, a former student of Kano’s Ju-Jutsu and Kosen Judo, made his living travelling and challenging opponents of other styles to prize fights, including wrestlers and western boxers, many of whom were much larger and stronger than him.
Thankfully, members of the Gracie Family and their students have continued to study, train, preserve and develop this Japanese art of Self-Defence to this day.
